Have you ever had a water leak and you don't know if it's stopped leaking yet?
Whenever you have had a water leak, the last thing you want to do is to paint the ceiling or the wall before it's completely dry. But how do you know it's fully dry and no longer leaking?
Well take a pencil and draw around the stain on the wall or the ceiling. That way if it continue to leak you will be able to tell as the stain will go beyond the pencil mark. Leave it for a couple of weeks and if the stain remains exactly the same size then it is likely that the leak is fixed. Then put on some stain block and decorate as normal.
